Time and my changing perspective of it are compelling to me. This interest and pursuit for understanding exposes a self-inquiry and thus brings to my work a collaboration of poetics, words, mixed media, and paint.
My work explores natural materials mixed with paint to achieve a varied surface. These materials include lint, corn husks, cotton balls, fabrics, straw, celluclay, and discarded materials that come from the painting process itself. Also, you will find messages, notes, old telephone books, and newspapers. These are seemingly the unimportant, disposable things in life but which ultimately accumulate and become the novels of our lives and the extraordinary ordinary.
Materials come and go in the painting journey, some hidden and others rising to the surfaceβan example itself of change and impermanence.
After contemplations of life and death, Clarice Lispector said, "Don't forget, in the meantime, that this is the season for strawberries. Yes." My work is a record of 'now' with an awareness of impermanence.
